As hydrofoil gains in popularity, when comes the time to purchase a board, the selection of a foil is much greater than it used to be 5 years ago. If you have decided to make your first steps on a hydrofoil, feel like a beginner in this new world, and have problems making the right choice, this quick review by IKO will definitely give you tips on what to look for!
If you have never been on a hydrofoil board before, there are specific aspects to take into account:
Size of the Mast
Wings extremity
Board characteristics
Foil’s aspect ratio
Price
The size of the mast
Choose a hydrofoil that has different mast heights. As shown on the pictures, the difference in height and weight is great and therefore, does have a huge impact on a beginner’s progression. The first mast will make it easy to get on the board right away. As it is shorter, you will feel the difference and be forgiven for the mistakes you are likely to make, and in case of a crash, it won’t be that bad. The second and third masts are more suitable for intermediate moves as you progress. Finally, the fourth mast is meant for further progression and proper riding.
Wings extremity
Another aspect to look for is the wings extremity. As shown on this picture, it is better if the ends are rounded. This is not really related to the performance of a beginner, but rather, the safety of the rider and the other people around. As you may already know, there is a high risk of hitting the foil while practicing. Although it may happen to anyone, it is more likely to occur to beginners who obviously have less control. Rounded extremities will reduce the risks of injuries when hitting your foil.
